Do NOT act frightened or intimidated. Do not act like a "victim". I'm not saying to antagonize them, but you must exude confidence and "capability". Stop saying "spidey senses" over and over. That is make believe (you know this, right?). You need to evaluate the situation and yes, your intuition is part of that. Be proactive with your security (were your bikes SECURELY locked??). Ours are secured by a seriously heavy, LARGE (1/2 links, Rockwell Hardness 62) Pewag security chain, and the baddest padlock you've ever seen. (Expensive? Yep.) Not gonna get them without a huge amount of noise and effort, if at all. Yeah, I know...anything "can" be defeated, but most will just move on. If they meant you harm (not just bikes) which is likely, then you were right to take the threat seriously. Did it ever occur to you to call the local cops? Because, as you said, they might have tried to block you and carjack you if you just drive away. They won't do it if the cops are there. But sometimes you shouldn't wait... Finally, take your personal security seriously. Multiple self defense options, yes...including firearms. Be sure you're legal and be VERY SURE you're well trained. Technically (physical training) and mentally as well. And avoid those kinds of environments when possible. Lots of good comments here already. Glad you're OK.

Geez, I've been thinking of getting a sprinter van and this is something that really gives me pause esp spending so much on a van. Why did life have to become so complicated and unsafe. I just want to explore but the safety concerns make it not worth it anymore.

First thing I noticed at the beginning of the video are the external shades you put on. Understandable with the heat, but my thought is as a single woman in van life m is that you need to be prepared to takeoff from within your van at a moments notice. With the external shades, you have to get out of the vehicle remove them and possibly put yourself in danger. I leave nothing outside at night as it gets towards dusk, so that if there's an incident, which has happened, I can jump into the driver seat and takeoff as you did. Just a thought to never have an external shade that will block your driving ability to takeoff immediately.

Thank you so much for sharing, I live in my rv in a park, however I often find myself slowing down and checking out rigs when I see them in parking lots, it never occurred to me that I might be making the owners nervous. I will be much more mindful in the future

Tany a missed her calling of an actress. Funny. David I want to compliment you on you giving of affection. That’s how many Jewish men are. ( I am Jewish and it’s complementary. ). Yes I agree he was scoping you out. We never open our door even at home. I’m so so glad you’re safe. We have an RV but we always stay at RV facility I suppose for this reason. We do have protection and a German shepherd but no opening doors to see what they want. If they tried to get in and succeeded then bad things would go down. Very scary guys. Thx for reminding all of us we need to be safe. I love your wife’s spidy senses. I have them for sure and my husband has definitely developed them over time.

Stayed in my van decades ago, before the current craze, and it was the same back then. Leaving is the right thing, as was putting some distance between you and the shady situation. Those looking to prey on you tend to be locals who won't drive half an hour or more. Once you get on the highway they give up in an exit or two as they have no idea if you are going to drive for hours or what.

I always answer unwanted questions with a question. ‘Are you veterans?’ ‘Why do you ask?’ It throws rude people off, they are expecting a yes or no answer and you throw in a disruptive response and they will have a truthful, unrehearsed response. If it were for something positive (extra veteran discount for example) then their answer will reveal it.

I’m a security officer, this is exactly why it’s unwise to be predictable. We shouldn’t take breaks at the same time everyday or have routines. While patrolling we’re not supposed to use the same route/go the same direction each time, also don’t patrol at predictable intervals. For example: every 30 minutes etc. Be unpredictable.

Veterans are military individuals which most have an idea on how to protect themselves. So maybe they were wondering if you were able to protect yourself.
